Important Produce Tips

Most fruit and veggie has PLU number.  That number tells you more than you think.  So here is a post to help you understand most.

  • 4-digit PLU number means the produce was grown with pesticides.
  • 5-digit PLU Number means wasn’t genetically modified in any way.  Plus should always start with a 9.

Sometimes you can’t afford organic so here is what the Environmental Working Groups (EWG) came up with a list of 15 produce items are less chemical.

  • Avocados
  • Sweet corn
  • Pineapples
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet peas (frozen)
  • Onion
  • Asparagus
  • Mangos
  • Papayas
  • Kiwi
  • Eggplant
  • Honeydew
  • Grapefruit
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cauliflower

Some items you NEVER want to buy non-organic, since you eat so of its skin.  So, in the end, they say you are eating the pesticides sprays they put on the item.

  • Kale + Collard Greens
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Hot peppers
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes (all types)
  • Celery
  • Grapes
  • Cherries
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cucumbers

My main tip on how to save on veggies and fruit.  Would be to only buy veggies and fruit when they are in season.  If you love the veggie so much you can.  All veggies and fruit can differently so you will have to look up how to your favorite on your own time.
